Accenture recently has released a report on the state of cyber attack prevention at organizations across several sectors, following an investigation spanning January to mid-March 2018. The consulting firm’s findings are not a complete picture of doom and gloom but are instead a mixed bag.
Considering the events of the past few years, that’s as rosy as you can expect cybersecurity analysis to be.
One markedly positive note: The incidence of focused cyber attacks that are being prevented is high and rising. Accenture investigated attacks with the potential to breach network defenses and cause damage and found that they were being prevented at a rate of 87 percent. This compares extremely favorably to a rate of just 70 percent last year.
But as the rate of prevention has risen, so has the rate of attack.
Hackers are pounding networks with distributed denial of service (DDoS), ransomware and other attack types at a greater frequency. Per the report: “The average number of focused cyberattacks per organization has more than doubled this year compared to the previous 12 months (232 through January 2018 versus 106 through January 2017).” Ransomware has doubled in frequency over the past year.
However, only two out of five organizations are researching new technologies, suggesting a lag in investment in light of the growing problem.
Companies looking for guidance in improving their security programs can find helpful suggestions within the Accenture report. In a discussion of Accenture’s findings, Security magazine summarizes some takeaway steps implied by the results. These include:
- A commitment to getting the foundation right, building out effective security controls and hardening assets.
- Incorporating pentests to emulate attackers.
- Including disruptive technologies like machine learning and artificial intelligence in the defense plan.
- Running proactive defense and hunting threats.
- Advancing the CISO office.
